Inhumane Humanity

Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed. --Herman Melville

The Fossil Fuels of the Future

Culture; commonly defined as customary beliefs, social forms and norms, material traits of a racial, religious, or social group, foods, and laws shared by people in a place or time.

All humans, whomever and wherever we are, tend to establish these defining characteristics as an extension of who we are by assuming our cultural identities as our own, sometimes to the detriment of the very cultures with which we identify.

Throughout human history, cultures have influenced virtually every aspect of our lives.  It determines what and how we eat, how we view and interact with one another, our religious and political preferences, our housing and even our sexual behavior.

We can certainly reject some of the attributes of our cultures, however, none can authoritatively claim the overly coveted “self-determined individual”, for there are far too many factors influencing our lives.  From the moment we’re born, until we’re pushing up daisies, we become little more than the sum of our surroundings, influenced by other people and the cultures in which we’re born.

Likewise; merging and converging cultures, or “transculturation”, has unavoidable effects on all aspects of life for us.   As with each human, cultures influence and change other cultures as well.  Through the technological advances influencing today’s trade, exploration/tourism, migration, and even war, cultures change via appropriation of the attributes of other cultures.

From food to dress; from religion to politics, cultures have and will continue to impact others.

This phenomenon is not without conflict, however, and those vociferously opposing the idea of blending cultures, desiring to remain isolated, fail to realize that all modern cultures are, and will continue to be, representative of almost every other culture on the planet.

And this fact creates opportunity for two very distinct choices; hegemony and harmony.

The convergence of cultures screams opportunities in education, personal growth, and expansion of one’s understanding of the world; in short, wisdom.  And, in todays world, it also screams necessity for change, for acceptance of and growth within this challenge, much in the same manner as biological evolution, will ensure survival of the culturally fit.

Regardless of personal preferences, converging cultures WILL evolve and survive.  It is inevitable, for one cultural identity simply cannot exist in a global society of many cultures, and we are now, much to the dismay of some, a global community.

The technological advances shrinking Planet Earth have ensured inevitable changes, and they will continue to drive cultural evolution, leaving behind those who cannot, or will not, evolve.

And what of those who are themselves products of the very enculturation of generations before them, yet, in their own hegemonic bigotry, intolerance, and xenophobia, choose to ignore this evolutionary fact?

Like the prima donna dinosaurs they are, they will be left to decay, leaving behind nothing but fossils for a culturally advanced civilization to marvel upon.

The United States is a perfect example of what you write about.

Because of our "melting pot" immigrant history the United States shows the effect of changing culture faster and more intense than other countries.

Every culture (people) that have immigrated to America has been discriminated against. Like a fraternity hazing, or rite of passage, and it always gets ugly.

In the end these migrations have changed not only our culture, but literally our physical appearance and more.

Unfortunately, we seem to have to relearn the lessons of history when it comes to bigotry and the treatment of our fellow countrymen. What a waste. And the suffering of the minority, while waiting for the majority to give inclusion, is outrageous.

The last thing we need while fighting those natural characteristics, is a leader, or governing party that is leading us back to the scourges we have been trying (poorly) to eliminate.

No matter what atrocities are thrust upon the people by a tyrant, or evil government, the people survive to live in the ashes left behind. Stalin killed 40 million, but the people survived. Hitler killed 8 million, but the people survived. Mao killed unknown 10's of millions, but the people survived - to live in the Hell left behind and to bury their dead.

The United States will survive (even Trump) but it remains to be seen how poor our condition will be.

It's scary how many millions of Americans seem to support the hate Trump stands for, but I believe the people will retain the good we have come to be known for. Just think of all the good we have done while causing the death of millions at the same time.

History says we are better. Our government has lasted 250 years. Even our wars have at least ended in reconciliation and rebuilding along with leaving more people less oppressed.

The enemy is within us and we certainly could destroy the whole dam thing including the Earth itself.

But I'll probably be an optimist until I'm in front of a firing squad.

How are you? Write more often. I enjoy your sanity compared to the BS on most blogs.

"Even our wars have at least ended in reconciliation and rebuilding along with leaving more people less oppressed."

Exception: What we did to the Native Americans. At least we tried to fix our slavery sin, but we simply committed genocide against the Native Americans.

The perfect remark! There are times when even the eternal optimists such as myself have to dig deep into the optimistic bucket to deal with the negativity of the political landscape today.

You're absolutely right. Short of some cataclysmic event destroying the entire race, humans will survive, even Trump. Perhaps we'll be forced to deal with a world we're unaccustomed to for a bit, but in the end, we will survive.

It's very easy, especially during times wherein moronic despot is attempting to rule our lives, to forget that it took humans 200,000 plus years just to evolve to the extent we could survive Mother Nature's tests and fury. In the big picture, even Trump is just another of a long, hard lesson to evolve beyond.

A point you touched on is perhaps the most important of life’s lessons to learn and learn well enough to remember - humans have a natural proclivity towards hegemony and it takes consistent and very deliberate efforts to properly manage that proclivity.

You and I both know that good leaders aren’t the dogmatic Trump’s of the world, but those who inspire people to be better, to grow and to achieve goals which benefit themselves AND the others around them. When a good leader is at the helm, people will look out for one another, ignoring the egocentric desires we’re born with.

When one accomplishes this, leadership takes no effort, yet the results are far more lasting than for those who must work at it.

Thanks again for your comments. I sincerely enjoy your visits
